Kennedy Loop Walk

February 15, 2012
I went for a morning walk on Kennedy Loop and saw a Tayra.  I have only seen them at Diablo Creek and Diablo beach before so I was surprised and delighted to see one so close by.
Sorry for the crappy photo, I couldn't get focused fast enough.  I was looking for a Manakin in the understory and after finding it, turned to see the Tayra trotting up the middle of the road. He saw me and quickly headed into the jungle.  I barely had time to get the camera up.  Tayras are members of the weasel family and are about 2 feet long without the tail and weigh about 11 pounds, They mainly eat fruit, but are opportunistic and will eat nearly anything. Click the photo to enlarge and check out the fangs. Maybe he wasn't as happy to see me as I was to see him? ;)

  1. That tayra looks like a black panther instead of a weasel !
With a two foot long body, it is almost as big, too.
